Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is a black solid that occurs naturally in the mineral pyrolusite. It is used as a colorant in the brick industry, and also to remove the green tint in glass. It is also a component in battery cathode mixes and electronics.

Product Characteristics

Manganese oxide is a very strong oxidant, and can be used in redox reactions with acid and reducing agents to produce a variety of products including hydrogen peroxide, hydroquinone, chloroform, etc. It is a good sputtering target, and can be sintered or used in granulations. It is available from READE in pellets, pieces, powder, sputtering targets, tablets and nanopowder (from American Elements’ nanoscale production facilities).

Storage & Handling:

Avoid contact with fire or other heat sources. Store in a cool, dry place and away from reducing agents and combustible materials.

Use & Exposure:

This material is highly toxic by inhalation or by swallowing. Eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation can occur as well as central nervous system effects. It is known to cause metal-fume fever and may have adverse reproductive effects based on animal studies.

Occupational exposures to high-valent manganese oxides can lead to a permanent neurological disorder called manganism, which causes tremors and other physical changes in the body. Symptoms can include difficulty walking, muscle spasms, hallucinations, and other abnormal symptoms that worsen over time.

Environmental Effects:

No OSHA Vacated PELs are listed for this product. The EPA does have a Secondary Maximum Contaminant Level standard for manganese in drinking water.
