When it comes to men’s wedding bands, there are a lot of options. Whether you want to keep it classic with gold or platinum, go with an industrial metal like titanium or carbon fiber or a more modern look like a thorium ring, there’s something out there for everyone.

This metal, which is more gray in color than platinum and darker than tungsten, has an attractive luster that is complemented by many different textures, finishes and embellishments that can be added to the rings. It’s also a very durable metal that stands up well to daily wear and resists scratches, dents and breakage. Plus, it won’t tarnish or expand when exposed to heat or water and can be easily resized by a jeweler in an emergency.

Because it’s an inert metal that doesn’t react with other metals, tantalum rings are one of the most acid-resistant wedding ring materials and also don’t conduct heat. They’re also hypoallergenic and bio-compatible, so they won’t exacerbate any skin conditions you might have.

Another plus is that unlike some alternative metals, like tungsten, which are known as conflict diamonds because they’re mined in war zones where people die for the minerals, tantalum isn’t mined in any areas that cause conflict or armed struggle and therefore is a good choice for those with sensitivity issues. However, like any other ring material, tantalum isn’t perfect and you should carefully weigh the pros and cons before making a final decision.
