What is titanium boreide?

Titanium boride is the most stable of all the compounds containing boron or titanium. It has a C32-structure and is combined as valence bonds. It is a hexagonal metalloid. The crystal structure is composed of a and C. a is 0.302 nm. In the crystal, the boron and titanium atoms alternately form a network structure in which the B and 3 other B are covalently-bonded and an extra electron forms a strong p bond. The graphite like layered structure between boron and Ti outer layers electrons determines TiB2’s good conductivity, metallic luster, and hardness.

Castables and the influence of the titanium boride amount

The carbon in the injectable material can improve the corrosion resistance of the materials, reduce structural spalling, and increase thermal shock stability. Castables will suffer from carbon oxidation. TiB2 is widely used in ceramics and corundum materials with good results. However, it has not been studied as much in castables. The effect of TiB2 additive on the properties iron trough castables was studied for this reason.

ASC iron-ditch castings were prepared to increase the oxidation resistance using brown corundum powder fused with SiC particles or fine powder. Other raw materials used included a-Al2O3 and Secar71 powders, silicon, sphere pitch, and silicon powder. The white powder of corundum was substituted with titanium boride, in different mass fractions, of 0, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2.0%, respectively. This was done to study the effect of TiB2 added on the properties. The results show with an increase in the amount of TiB2, the linear change after 3 hours at 1000 or 1500 first decreases then increases. Bulk density increases then decreases. Appearance porosity increases then decreases. First the flexural resistance increases, then it decreases. Next comes oxidation. Addition of TiB2 at 1% (w) can give the highest high-temperature flexural resistance. Addition of 1% (w), TiB2, can give a sample a more comprehensive index.
